And yet, as of 2026, only 56.35 per cent of them are considered employable by industry standards \u2014 a number that, while improved from earlier years, still leaves&nbsp;nearly half&nbsp;the graduating cohort unprepared for the jobs they are chasing. The root of this disconnect is not a lack of effort or intelligence. It is structural. The gap between what curricula teach and what industries demand has become one of the most persistent failures of Indian higher education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The India Skills Report 2026, prepared by ETS, CII, AICTE, AIU, and&nbsp;Taggd, is clear: micro-credentials, internships, and industry projects are now essential pathways to employability, not optional extras. Meanwhile, syllabi at many institutions lag five to ten years behind current industry requirements. The Unstop Talent Report 2026 adds a harder number \u2014 85 per cent of engineering graduates remain unplaced despite strong hiring intent from companies. Faculty development inertia, reluctance to share curriculum design with industry partners, and an absence of financial incentives for professionals to step into classrooms all contribute to this failure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Apprenticeship Act in India, despite amendments,&nbsp;remains&nbsp;underutilised. Only 27.73 lakh apprentices have been engaged under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme in the last five years.
